Building and Content Insurance
If you have a mortgage it is mandatory to cover the building and although it is not essential to cover the contents the two are normally linked together. Formerly if you had a mortgage the Building Society who arranged the mortgage on your home could insist that you had their building and contents insurance – if you chose to go elsewhere they would make you pay a surcharge. These days this is not the case and you can, and should, shop around. Building Societies and Banks can be more expensive than dedicated Insurance Companies.
